Paper-based Theory of Music exams available ‘on application’

In 2020, Theory of Music exams in the traditional paper-based format will be available ‘on application’. A school or private studio with a group of ten or more candidates may apply to host paper-based Theory of Music examinations on any convenient date from March through to November. A group may comprise candidates undertaking any Theory of Music grade or diploma examination at the same time. Studio teachers may wish to collaborate to arrange a group of acceptable size. (Please contact us if we may be of assistance.) There will no longer be a fixed examination date in August.

New Set Works from 2020

New Set Works for Theory of Music Grades 5 and 6 will apply to online examinations purchased on or after 1 January 2020 and to paper-based examinations in 2020. Candidates who purchased an online examination in 2019 will have twelve months from the date of purchase to complete the examination using the old Set Works. (No extension of time will be possible.)

The introduction of Set Works in Theory of Music Grade 5 is designed to assist students’ development of analytical skills at an earlier stage of learning and will more closely align the Theory of Music and Musicianship syllabuses. Candidates should be prepared to answer questions on ALL Set Works in the exam. A new digital publication, Theory of Music Analytical notes will be available to assist candidates preparing for this section of the exam.

Licentiate Diploma in Musicology

Both Group 1 and Group 2 of the Set Works in the Licentiate Diploma in Musicology syllabus have changed. (There are no changes to the Set Works for the Associate Diploma in Musicology.)

Musicianship

Musicianship Grade exams will be available only in the online format in 2020. New Set Works for Musicianship Grades 5 and 6 will apply to online examinations purchased on or after 1 January 2020. Candidates who purchased an online examination in 2019 will have twelve months from the date of purchase to complete the examination using the old Set Works. (No extension of date will be possible.) Candidates should be prepared to answer questions on ALL Set Works in the exam. A new digital publication, Musicianship Analytical notes will be available to assist candidates preparing for this section of the exam.

Music Craft

In 2020, Music Craft Grades 5 and 6 will continue to be available as paper-based exams. (All other grades of Music Craft are available in the online format.) Written and aural components of Music Craft Grade 5 and Grade 6 will be examined on a set day in August.
