Hosting Practical examinations

A school or private studio enrolling candidates for a total examining time of three hours or more in a particular instrument can apply to host Practical examinations during published session dates.

It might be possible to host Practical exams outside the published session dates; please contact us before enrolling candidates to discuss your preferred dates so that we can check examiner availability.

Requests from schools or teachers for practical examinations to be conducted at a venue other than the Melbourne or Regional venues listed below may be made by submitting a Practical Exam Venue Questionnaire (click to download). Teachers may wish to collaborate to make up three hours of examining time in a particular instrument and offer a common studio for a particular session. The host school or studio teacher will be responsible for supervision of the examination venue.

The following instruments may be combined to make up the minimum three hours of examining time (see the 2024 Manual of Syllabuses page xiv for exam durations):

Violin and Viola
Cello and Double Bass
Clarinet and Saxophone
Oboe and Bassoon
Singing and Musical Theatre
Brass instruments, including Band
Rockschool instruments
Speech and Drama subjects

Note that Associate and Licentiate diploma examinations are available at the AMEB Studios in Hawthorn only.
