AMEB is proud to continue its partnership with RSL Awards to deliver Rockschool exams in Australia. Based in the UK, Rockschool specialises in music in a range of contemporary and popular styles. Its qualifications are recognised globally with tens of thousands of exams conducted in the UK and over 40 countries around the world.
Face-to-face Rockschool exams
There are two options for Rockschool exams; Grade Exams and Performance Certificates.
- The Grade Exam (Debut to Grade 8) provides a framework for progressive development of a wide range of musical and technical skills over a series of grades. Pieces are focused on popular music genres and selected by experts to suit the needs of students at each grade level. Technical, aural and sight-reading skills are acquired in a sequential way.
- A Rockschool Performance Certificate (Premier to Grade 8) includes 5 pieces only. (There are no Technical Exercises, Ear Tests, Sight-reading or General Musicianship requirements in a Performance Certificate exam.)
- A Yamaha acoustic drum kit and a Zildjian K Sweet cymbal set are used for Rockschool exams at the Hawthorn Studios.
- Proof of identity is required for candidates enrolled in Grades 6, 7 and 8 (photo ID is to be presented to the examiner).
- Backing tracks are optional for Free Choice pieces, but a copy of the piece must be provided to the examiner on the day (a lead sheet is acceptable).
- Drummers should bring sticks and are encouraged to wear earplugs or headphones (not noise-cancelling) for hearing protection.
- Guitarists should bring their guitar, leads and effects pedals.
Exams by pre-recorded video
Rockschool candidates have the option submitted a pre-recorded Graded Certificate or Performance Certificate exam.
- A Graded Certificate exam (Debut to Grade 8) includes pieces and Technical Work.
- A Performance Certificate (Premier to Grade 8) includes 5 performance pieces (no Technical Work or unseen Tests).
- Rockschool videos are first uploaded to a sharing platform (YouTube, Vimeo, Google Drive, DropBox etc) then the video link pasted into the video submission form.
- A PDF copy of each Free Choice chart must be emailed to us at the time of submission. (Examination copies are allowed under Australian Copyright Law.)
- Grade 6, 7 & 8 candidates are required to show their photo ID to camera (not YouTube).
Rockschool video exams
Rockschool video exams are uploaded to YouTube, Vimeo, Google Drive (or similar) and the video link submitted to AMEB Victoria via our submission form.
