Vale Graham Bartle OAM

6/11/1928 – 28/4/2024

We are saddened to learn that Graham Bartle OAM passed away last weekend. Graham was immensely respected and a source of admiration in the AMEB community.

An AMEB examiner from 1971, Graham examined tens of thousands of AMEB piano and theory candidates in Victoria, Southeast Asia, and New Zealand. He contributed to the governance and management of AMEB Victoria over many years and was a Federal Examiner for Theory of Music and Musicianship.

Graham was a highly regarded Lecturer at the University of Melbourne and held senior positions within the university’s Faculty of Music.

His service to the AMEB, to the discipline of Music at the University of Melbourne and beyond, and to the broader field of Music Education was in every sense both selfless and exemplary. Graham’s contributions were acknowledged by the award of AMEB’s Honorary Fellowship in Music in 2012.

Above all, Graham was a warm, approachable man with an inexhaustible passion for championing the development and promotion of music education in Australia. In 2011, he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia ‘for service to music education’.

Graham’s life will be celebrated, and his legacy will live on in the fond memories of all those he taught, examined, and worked with.

On behalf of AMEB Victoria’s Directors, Management, Examiners and Administrative Personnel, I offer our warmest and most sincere condolences to Graham Bartle’s family and friends.
