Update from the General Manager (1 June 2020)

Video exam range expanded

Face-to-face exams to resume soon

AMEB has adapted its services to offer greater support for online teaching and learning during these unprecedented times; and AMEB Victoria is offering a variety of ways for students to present for examinations and performance evaluations in 2020 – including recorded video for Music Practical, online video for Speech & Drama – as well as traditional face-to-face assessments (circumstances permitting).

Traditional face-to-face practical examinations
As social distancing directives are relaxed and schools return to face-to-face teaching, AMEB Victoria will gradually resume face-to-face examining. Our first concern is for health and safety, and face-to-face examinations will be offered only when it is considered safe to do so, following consultation with teachers, private enrollers and examiners.

AMEB Connect is open to enrolments for additional face-to-face practical sessions from August to December. However, we will monitor Victoria’s physical distancing rules and before scheduling any face-to-face exam we will consult with enrollers to understand their preferences. Options might include:

1. continuing with face-to-face examinations at their school, teaching studio, or at our Hawthorn studios, circumstances permitting;
2. transferring the enrolment to a later face-to-face exam session; or
3. transferring to a Repertoire examination by video.

We appreciate that there is still some uncertainty regarding the possibility of presenting for face-to-face exams at a future date, however enrolments can be made with confidence, on the understanding that there will be no charge for transfers; and full refunds will be given, on request.

Attendance for face-to-face examinations at our Hawthorn studios will be subject to limits on visitor numbers and strict application of physical distancing rules and sanitisation protocols. As it will be possible to open only a small number of studios at Hawthorn, preference will be given to higher grade, Certificate and Diploma examinations. We recommend that, from now until the end of 2020, schools and private studios consider hosting examinations where possible.

Given the restrictions on studio availability at Hawthorn and recognising the limited availability of school facilities during the teaching day, many examiners have generously offered to conduct face-to-face examinations on weekday evenings (Monday to Thursday) until 9pm.

Practical examinations by video
AMEB Victoria has developed a video exam offering in almost all Music Practical Repertoire subjects from Preliminary to Grade 8. The examination requirements are the same as the face-to-face Repertoire exam described in the 2020 Manual of Syllabuses.

As previously advised, Repertoire grade exams are also available to students of Piano for LeisureSinging for LeisureSaxophone for Leisure and P Plate Piano, by video submission or face-to-face (circumstances permitting).

Rockschool Performance Certificates (Premiere to Grade 8) and Rockschool Graded Certificates (Debut to Grade 5) are also available via video submission.

Certificate of Performance and Associate exams
A Video Certificate of Performance examination is now available in two parts: a repertoire performance by video submission; and an online General Knowledge interview.

The Video Associate examination is available by special application only, to candidates who are unable attend the AMEB Hawthorn studios due to travel restrictions or health advice.

A new CPM Repertoire exam has been developed and will be available by video submission from 15 June until 30 November.<Read more>
