AMEB Practical Examinations 12 June to 26 June

The Victorian Government has announced that the ‘Circuit Breaker Restrictions’ will be eased from Friday 11 June; however travel restrictions, density quotients, mask-wearing rules and other COVIDSafe measures will remain in place for some time.

We understand the impact of two weeks of stay-at-home restrictions on tuition and exam preparation, particularly for candidates studying brass, speech, voice and wind instruments. And we appreciate the desire of candidates to complete their examinations at the earliest opportunity and move on to the next stage of their studies.

Anticipating the restrictions that are expected to apply over coming weeks, we have made the following decisions regarding examinations scheduled at the AMEB Hawthorn studios between Saturday 12 June and Wednesday 23 June:

A. Piano and String examinations will proceed under strict COVIDSafe protocols, including compulsory wearing of fitted face-masks (unless under 12 or exempt under Department of Health guidelines).

We note that the 25-kilometre travel limit does not apply to travel for work or education; however the enroller of a candidate who has health and safety concerns is invited to contact us to arrange for the examination to be deferred.

B. Brass, Speech, Voice and Woodwind examinations that were scheduled at our Hawthorn Studios between 12 and 23 June are cancelled.

C. The Licentiate diploma examinations scheduled from 24 to 26 June will proceed as planned (subject to Department of Health directives).

To candidates whose examinations are cancelled we are pleased to offer the following alternatives (at no additional cost):

(1) Defer the examination to a date between 12 July and 18 July.
(Candidates will need to be flexible with examination dates so that we can cater for the anticipated demand during this brief window of time. Whilst dates to be avoided for appropriate reasons can be accepted, we will not be able to consider requests for particular examination dates.)
(2) Defer the examination to the Fourth Metropolitan Session (9 August to 4 September).
(3) Transfer to a Video Repertoire exam (Music Repertoire exams from Preliminary to Grade 8 only).

Plans for examinations at venues other than the AMEB Hawthorn studios will be discussed with venue owners.

The closing dates for entries in three upcoming Practical exam sessions will be extended, as follows (note that it will not be possible to accept late enrolments):

4th Metropolitan Practical Session – enrolments close 11:59pm on Friday 18 June.
2nd Licentiate Practical Session – enrolments close 11:59pm on Friday 23 July.
5th Metropolitan Practical Session enrolments close 11:59pm on Friday 30 July.

To accommodate the anticipated number of candidates for examinations in the 4th Metropolitan Practical Session, the 2nd Licentiate Practical Session will start and finish a little later (18 to 26 September).

The health and safety of candidates, accompanying persons, examiners and administrative personnel is our highest priority; and the AMEB Studios in Hawthorn will resume operating under a very conservative COVIDSafe plan. Our Health and Hygiene protocols are published on our website and may be found here.

Please email enquiries to ameb-vic@unimelb.edu.au. Although several administrative personnel will attend the office from Friday 11 June, the general telephone number should be reserved for urgent communications about examinations currently being held at the Hawthorn studios.

With best wishes,
